Every day, we use math in our lives. Whether it’s counting change or inventory at work, mathematics play a big part in our lives. That is why we need to have a few mental arithmetic tricks up on our sleeves.

Now, I’m sure that some of you would protest and tell me that that’s what calculators are for. They were made to spare us from complicated equations and formulas. And trust me; I know what you’re saying.

I’ve never really liked math but because of the dawn of speed learning, I’ve also learned more about mental arithmetic and realized that it is quite easy but with very huge benefits.

There are tons of mental arithmetic tricks right now that are unbelievably simple. Trust me, once you get to know these tricks, you would be surprised as to how simple and easy to understand they are.

Math and mental arithmetic can be fun and enjoyable if you understand and use the different techniques. Now, just to give you a teaser, here is one of the easiest mental arithmetic tricks that I use.

Multiplying by 11

Multiplying single digit numbers to 11 is easy. 5×11 is 55. Again, it’s easy.

But what happens when you multiply 11 by another double digit number? Yes, it’s not as easy anymore. But if you know this technique, you’ll realize that it is still quite easy.

Example: 77 x 11 =?

First, you take away the two digit number (77).

Add the first digit to the second digit (7+7=14)

In this case, the sum is still two digits. What you do is just take the last digit of the sum (4), add 1 to the first digit of the original number (7+1) and add the last digit. (7+1)_4_7= 847

Here’s an illustrative summary:

77 x 11= 847

7 + 7= 14

7(+1) _4_7= 847

Easy, eh?
